Emma Gwillim: My story (so far)

Mine has been a weaving path of discovering what makes me tick. Opting to study English Literature at uni lead me to a journalism degree, and onto a decade-and-a-bit handling PR and marketing for consumer brands like Asda, Pernod-Ricard, ghd haircare, St Tropez tan and a raft more.

I loved getting under the skin of brands - utilising trend forecasts and customer insights to develop brands from innovation through to product testing and promotion. What I loved most was the chance to be creative, whether that was production of brand-photoshoots and press kits, developing concepts for campaigns and media launches, creating copy for brands and influencers, or working on events like London Fashion Week, music festivals and RHS garden shows.

Writing and creating, my first loves, began to feature less and less with the more responsibility I took on. But, it was moving into the role of leader/manager, that I learned another truth - I love helping people to see and fulfil their potential. I opted to build my skills in this and became a Master Practitioner of NLP and certified coach.

Work was just one part of it though. I became a mum to two dreamy boys within the space of 19 months, we relocated (twice) and I felt my identity shift - for better and worse. Here’s where anxiety deftly crept in and, for a while, ran the show - something I shared my brutally honest account of here. And this, again, weaved my path into becoming a yoga teacher and breathwork facilitator.

I began to host community classes teaching yoga and breath-work as a passion project. Bringing individuals together, each with their own backstory, into one space to breathe and move together - and then seeing the often visible shifts in their sense of wellbeing - felt like a privilege. I’d felt that visceral shift in my own body and I became curious.

I started to study the work of Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, Arielle Schwartz, Stephen Porges and Deb Dana. Alongside this, I deepened my practice and knowledge of yin yoga, trauma-informed yoga, classic pranayama and, with David Elliott, experienced the effects of healing breathwork. And it brings me to now, to a point where all these threads weave together.
